PFO Closure for Cryptogenic Stroke

The presence of a patent foramen ovale in a patient who has sustained an apparent stroke has always posed a therapeutic dilemma, since open heart surgery seems overly invasive for such a small defect. Fortunately, catheter-mounted devices have been developed that enable closure of many PFOs without surgery. This article reviews the indications, methods, and results of interventional therapy for PFO.
